Who We Are
The Superior Animal Rescue Federation was incorporated in 1988 by four charter members: Dan O'Neill, Mary V. Cole, Jack Downs, and Connie Jackson. Prior to that the organization was known as the Animal Alliance of Douglas County.
On January 1, 2001 the city of Superior turned over the operation of its shelter to ARF. The first thing ARF did was dismantle the primitive gas chamber. Since then the percentage of dogs and cats adopted has increased greatly. The number of animals euthanized went from the hundreds to the 20's per year, done by a veterinarian when necessary.
When ARF's Care & Adoption Center is overcrowded, we turn to foster homes, a new practice in Superior. ARF strives to educate the public on the care and responsibility of pet guardianship through leaflets, newsletters, newspaper articles and our website.
ARF rescues animals from abusive situations and seeks veterinary care for animals who need it. Animals in ARF's care receive vaccinations at the appropriate ages, they are de-wormed, treated for flea and tick infestation if necessary, fed, groomed, exercised, socialized and played with in order to provide them with as good a life as possible while they await a home. Adopted animals leave ARF with certificates for a free spay/neuter surgery.
